Frequently Asked Questions

In the search for a therapist, questions are a natural, healthy part of the process.

Below you’ll find some of the most commonly asked questions I hear.

Q: How will I know if we’re a good fit?

A: Having a trusting and comfortable relationship between client and therapist is key to the therapeutic process. I usually recommend three sessions to see if you feel like we’re a good fit. And, rest assured, therapists do not take it personally should you decide to move on to another practitioner.

Q: How will I know therapy is working?

A: You’ll start feeling better—how you notice it will depend on the symptoms you presented with in the beginning. It might be a physical feeling, emotional, behavioral or cognitive.

Q: How long should I expect to be in therapy?

A: It depends on the issue, the individual, their goals, their symptoms and how long they’ve been suffering as well as the methods used by the therapist. We will discuss your goals and re-evaluate periodically to see if you are on track.

Q: How do you ensure confidentiality?

A: For every teletherapy appointment, I use a platform called Therapy Appointment which is designed specifically for HIPPA compliant teletherapy and communications. Additionally, outside of anyone you specify, I do not share anything we discuss in sessions.

Q: Do you accept insurance?

A: Yes. I am currently credentialed with Aetna, Premera Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Optum, United Healthcare (UHC/UBH).

Q: Can I pay you directly instead of using insurance?

A: In addition to working with insurance companies, I also accept direct payment from my clients.

Q: I’ve never been to therapy before. What can I expect?

A:  If this is your first time going to therapy, the first session is usually an assessment session where you can expect to be asked about your reasons for seeking therapy and your personal history.

We will spend time getting to know each other and begin to help you identify some of your goals for your time together. Confidentiality and limits to confidentiality will be discussed right at the beginning. Some people find it helpful to jot down pre and post therapy reflections. See this resource page for a therapy note taking worksheet.

Q: Do you work with families, couples, and/or adolescents?

A:  I work with adult individuals 21 years of age or older. I will also meet with parents for parental counseling.
